iPhone 4S vs. ‘iPhone 5′: Detailed Front Panel Comparison

Posted on 08-05-2012 10:48 pm

There have been a lot of supposed leaks of next-gen iPhone parts, and even a video comparing the next-gen iPhone’s face to the current iPhone 4S. A new video posted this morning by ETrade (via MacRumors/iPhoneinCanada) provides the most detailed comparison yetbetween the two front panels, showing some very interesting changes.

First of all let’s see the display screen. From the picture, we can see that the iPhone 5 glass lens is 90.25mm long, 51.60mm wide, while iPhone 4S is 76.65mm and 51.60mm. The display area enlarges from 3.61 inches to 4.065 inches. The LCD screen can be a little smaller, and that will be around 4 inches. What’s important, the resolution ratio of iPhone 5 glass lens is around 16:9, which will be a big change for iPhone.

While the idea of a taller 4-inch display is fairly well accepted, ETrade provides very precise measurements of the face, showing a 4.065-inch display window that is significantly thinner than what has been used on any previous iPhone. As previously suggested, the taller screen brings the iPhone to a 16×9 aspect ratio.

As you might expect, the buffer area around the home button, as well as around the earpiece, has also been reduced to make room for the larger screen while minimizing the need to increase the size of the phone. The new front panel also transmits significantly more light than its predecessor, and has been found to be extremely scratch resistant – much more so than the iPhone 4S panel.
